After churning of the ocean , poison comes out of the ocean and Bhagwan shiv consumed it to save the universe, and throat of shiv ji becomes blue
Then to give him coldness (शीतलता) moon started living on the head of shiva

मान्यता है कि भगवान शिव ने इस ब्रह्मांण और सृष्टि की रक्षा के लिए समुद्र मंथन से निकले विष को पी लिया था। विष के प्रभाव से जब भगवान शंकर का शरीर गर्म होने लगा तब चंद्रमा ने भोलेशंकर के सिर पर विराजमान होकर उन्हें शीतलता प्रदान करने की प्रार्थना की। लेकिन शिव ने चंद्रमा के आग्रह को नहीं माना। लेकिन जब भगवान शंकर विष के तीव्र प्रभाव को सहन नहीं कर पाये तब देवताओं ने सिर पर चंद्रमा को धारण करने का निवेदन किया। जब भगवान शिव ने चंद्रमा को धारण किया तब विष की तीव्रता कम होने लगी। तभी से चंद्रमा शिव के सिर पर विराजमान हैं।
