NASA’s Psyche mission is a $1.2 billion spacecraft that will explore the metal-rich asteroid Psyche. The mission will take six years to reach the asteroid, which is located in the Main Asteroid Belt. The spacecraft will arrive at Mars in May 2026 and use the planet’s gravity to slingshot itself toward Psyche. It will arrive at the asteroid in late July 2029.
It will orbit the asteroid for 26 months. During this time, it will:
- Map the surface
- Take images
- Collect data to determine the asteroid’s composition
- Measure the elemental composition of the surface
- Detect any magnetic field
- Map the gravity and interior structure
The spacecraft will use a variety of instruments, including:
- A Gamay Neutron spectrometer
- A magnetometer
- A radio
The spacecraft will use Hall effect thrusters, which are five times more efficient than normal rockets. It will also have five panel fold out solar panels to provide electricity for the thrusters.
The Psyche mission is the first dedicated NASA launch on a Falcon Heavy rocket. It’s also the first interplanetary mission flown by the Falcon Heavy.
