HD 189733b is a giant planet with a deep-blue atmosphere. It’s the first planet that astronomers determined the true color of using the Hubble Space Telescope.

HD 189733b is reminiscent of Earth’s color as seen from space. However, the similarities end there. On this turbulent alien world, the daytime temperature is nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it possibly rains glass — sideways — in howling, 4,500-mph winds.

HD 189733b has the following characteristics:

  • Mass of 1.162 +0.058 −0.039 MJ
  • Surface gravity of 21.2 m/s2 (70 ft/s2)
  • Albedo of 0.40 ± 0.12 (290–450 nm) < 0.12 (450–570 nm)
  • Temperature of 1117 ± 42 K
  • Radius of 1.138 Rjup
  • Orbital period of 2.22 days
  • Semi-major axis of 0.0314 AU

HD 189733 b is an exoplanet in the constellation of Vulpeculaapproximately 64.5 light-years (19.8 pc) away from our Solar System. Astronomers in France discovered the planet orbiting the star HD 189733 on October 5, 2005, by observing its transit across the star’s face

HD 189733 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 1.13 Jupiters, it takes 2.2 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.0313 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2005

The nightmare world of HD 189733 b is the killer you never see coming. To the human eye, this far-off planet looks bright blue. But any space traveler confusing it with the friendly skies of Earth would be badly mistaken

At a distance of just 63 light years, HD 189733b is the closest hot Jupiter to Earth, which makes it a prime target for astronomers who want to learn more about this type of exoplanet and the atmosphere around it

The mass of the planet is estimated to be 16% larger than Jupiter’s, with the planet completing an orbit around its host star every 2.2 days and an orbital speed of 152.5 kilometres per second (341,000 mph).

Weather and rains of molten glass

The weather on HD 189733b is deadly. The winds, composed of silicate particles, blow up to 8,700 kilometres per hour (5,400 mph). Observations of this planet have also found evidence that it rains molten glass, horizontally

Light from the planet HD 189733b was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and analyzed. Astronomers say that the giant planet has a deep-blue atmosphere, but conditions are in no way Earth-like
