Abell 1185 is a galaxy cluster visible through the southwest edge of Ursa Major. The cluster contains at least 82 galaxies at a distance of about 400 million light-years from Earth. The most prominent galaxies in this image are elliptical galaxies, but many spiral, lenticular, and irregular galaxies are also seen.

The Abell catalog is a list of approximately 4,000 galaxy clusters. The catalog was compiled by American astronomer George O. Abell in 1958. Abell used plates from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) to identify 2,712 galaxy clusters.  In 1987, Abell, Corwin, and Olowin extended the catalog to the southern hemisphere. 

The Abell catalog contains galaxy clusters with at least 30 members and a redshift of z = 0.2. Of the 2,712 clusters identified by Abell, 1,351 have been observed by the SDSS Data Release 5.

• Abell 370: One of the first galaxy clusters where astronomers observed gravitational lensing. 
• Abell 2744: Located 3.5 billion light-years away, this cluster contains several hundred galaxies.
