The current version of evolutionary theory is called the Modern Synthesis. It combines Darwin’s ideas of natural selection and common descent with the new science of genetics. The Modern Synthesis was developed in the 1930s and 1940s. 

The Modern Synthesis is also known as the Neo-Darwinian theory. It states that evolution occurs through: 

  • Natural selection of genetically modified characters or genotypes 
  • Accumulation of inherited random mutations 
  • Genetic recombination during fertilization 
  • Mutation, gene flow, and genetic drift 

The Modern Synthesis states that new species are formed by: 

  • Accumulation of inherited random mutations 
  • Genetic recombination during fertilization 

Darwin’s theory of evolution emphasized the importance of natural selection. The Modern Synthesis identifies three other evolutionary forces: mutation, gene flow, and genetic drift. 

Other theories of evolution include: 

  • Mutationism Proposed by De Vries, this theory does away with natural selection as a major evolutionary process. 
  • Neo-Darwinian theory Also known as the Modern Synthetic Theory of Evolution, this theory merges Darwinian evolution with Mendelian genetics.
