Black holes form when a star collapses in on itself at the end of its life cycle. This collapse causes a supernova, which blasts part of the star into space.
Black holes can also form when:
- Two neutron stars collide
- Primordial black holes form around the time of the Big Bang
- Supermassive black holes form during the formation of the galaxy they belong to
Black holes can grow by absorbing mass from their surroundings. Supermassive black holes can form by absorbing other stars and merging with other black holes.
Black holes are not visible because gravity pulls all the light to the center of the hole.
The nearest known black hole is Gaia BH1, which is 1,560 light-years away from Earth.
