Scientists are working on plans to build roads on the moon using lunar dust. They plan to melt the dust into a solid, glassy surface. 

One way to melt the dust is to use a laser. Researchers suggest using a 25-foot lens to focus sunlight like a laser beam. Another way is to use a robotic 3D-printing system. 

ICON, a space company, plans to use lunar dirt, known as regolith, to manufacture infrastructure projects on the moon. In 2022, ICON won a $57.2 million contract from NASA to develop its lunar construction techniques. 

The ESA also recently melted lunar dust into a solid substance that could be used to build roads on the moon

What is special about moon dust?

On Earth, fine particles tend to smoothen over years of erosion by wind and water, lunar dust however, is not round, but sharp and spiky. In addition the Moon has no atmosphere and is constantly bombarded by radiation from the Sun that causes the soil to become electrostatically charged
