Researchers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have detected evidence for quartz nanocrystals in the high-altitude clouds of WASP-17 b, a hot Jupiter exoplanet 1,300 light-years from Earth. The detection, which was uniquely possible with Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), marks the first time that silica (SiO2) particles have been spotted in an exoplanet atmosphere

WASP-17 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits the star WASP-17 in the constellation Scorpius. It was discovered in 2009. WASP-17 b is the first planet discovered to have a retrograde orbit, meaning it orbits in a direction counter to the rotation of its host star.

  • It has a mass of 0.78 Jupiters. 
  • It takes 3.7 days to complete one orbit of its star. 
  • It’s 0.0515 AU from its star, which is about 4.75 million miles, or one-eighth the distance between Mercury and the Sun. 
  • It’s located about 1269.1 light-years (389.1 pc) away from the Solar System. 
  • Its host star has an apparent magnitude of 11.6, with an absolute magnitude of 3.6. 

WASP-17 b’s atmosphere contains aerosols, which are tiny particles that make up clouds or haze. The aerosols are made of quartz

Quartz clouds are clouds made of quartz crystals. The quartz crystals in the clouds of the exoplanet WASP-17b are not swept up from a rocky surface, but instead originate in the atmosphere itself. They form directly from gas under the extreme conditions of WASP-17b’s atmosphere. 

The James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) captured the first evidence of quartz in the clouds of an exoplanet on March 12–13, 2023. The telescope detected an unexpected “bump” at 8.6 microns that was best explained by the clouds being composed of quartz.
