There are 14000 dangerous ( hazardous) asteroids to be found

NASA’s planetary defense experts estimate that there are more than 14,000 asteroids with a diameter of 140 meters that have yet to be found. These asteroids are defined as near-Earth objects (NEOs) that are more than 460 feet in size and have orbits that bring them as close as 4.6 million miles of Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

As of March 2023, NASA had identified around 31,000 NEOs, of which about 2,300 are considered potentially hazardous. NASA has the technology to find these objects years, decades, or even a century before they pose an impact threat to Earth. However, finding the remainder of these asteroids will need to be done from space.

NASA’s DART spacecraft was built at Johns Hopkins University and launched in November of 2021. The DART mission was the first-ever planetary defense test.

They estimate there are more than 14,000 140m diameter asteroids that we have yet to find. And one of those could well be on a collision path. Even more strikingly, they estimate that there are around 50 1km diameter asteroids that we have yet to find floating in the void of space

How many asteroids have we detected?

Currently, near-Earth asteroids make up about a third of the roughly one million asteroids discovered so far in the solar system. Most of them reside in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars.

What asteroid killed the dinosaurs?

Sixty-six-million years ago, a nearly nine-mile-wide asteroid collided with Earth, sparking a mass extinction that wiped out most dinosaurs and three-quarters of the planet’s plant and animal species. Now we’re learning that the Chicxulub asteroid also generated a massive “megatsunami” with waves more than a mile high.19-Oct-2
