The Kardashev scale classifies civilizations based on their ability to harvest energy. The scale has three basic levels: 

• Type I A technological level similar to Earth’s. Type I civilizations harvest planetary power using all the sunlight that hits their planet. 
• Type II A civilization that can harness the energy of its own star. Type II civilizations can directly consume a star’s energy, likely using a Dyson sphere. 
• Type III A civilization that can use the energy of its own galaxy. Type III civilizations can capture all the energy emitted by their galaxy, including every star and black hole. 

Type IV civilizations can use the energy of multiple galaxies. 

The Kardashev scale also includes subcategories on the lower end of the spectrum. These include: 

• Type 0.2: Bands of roaming hunter-gatherers that form kinship groups. 
• Type 0.3: Tribes of individuals linked through kinship but with a more settled and agrarian lifestyle. 

Humanity has yet to achieve Type 1 status.

A Type IV civilization, or K4 civilization harnesses the power of its own supercluster of galaxies, and eventually its universe of origin, and become effectively immortal. A civilization this advanced could tap into the mysterious dark matter and manipulate the basic fabric of spacetime

• Type II: Can exceed up to level 4 and 5

The scale was originally just tied to energy available for communications, but has since been expanded. 

The scale ranks civilizations from Type 1 to Type 3 based on energy harvesting. Humanity has yet to achieve Type 1 status.
