A new study suggests that the Moon is 4.46 billion years old, which is 40 million years older than previously thought. The study used crystals brought back by Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972. The researchers used a technique that involved evaporating individual atoms from one of the zircon crystals with a laser beam and identifying them. 

Previous assessments estimated the Moon as 4.425 billion years old. The new study found that the crystal formed 4.46 billion years ago, which is 40 million years earlier than the previously confirmed oldest crystal found on the moon. 

The study’s lead author, Dr Jennika Greer of the University of Glasgow, said, “When you know how old something is, you can better understand what has happened to it in its history”.
