The most powerful mars quake ever detected (The big one

The largest marsquake ever detected was recorded on May 4, 2022 by NASA’s InSight lander. The quake, designated S1222a, had a magnitude of 4.7. It was five times stronger than the previous record holder, which was a magnitude 4.2 quake that InSight measured in 2021.

The quake was fairly modest by Earth standards, but strong for Mars. It was nearly 10 times more powerful than the previous record-holding Red Planet temblor.

Scientists think the quake originated a few dozen miles (km) below the surface. They reviewed images from spacecraft orbiting Mars from multiple different space agencies, but they could not find evidence of a blast zone or crater that would suggest a recent meteor impact.

The new findings show that the Red Planet is more seismically active than previously though

Marsquakes are typically less violent than earthquakes. They are more difficult to detect, and other vibrations, such as from the wind, can interfere with readings. The InSight lander is equipped with a highly sensitive seismometer called the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure.

Marsquakes are relatively small, but some are comparable to a magnitude 4.0 earthquake on Earth. They happen more often during the planet’s northern summer.

The strongest marsquake ever detected was caused by tectonic forces within the planet itself, not a crashing asteroid. The vibrations lasted for at least six hours.

The largest marsquake ever detected was estimated to be a magnitude 5. It released five times more energy than any previously recorded quake.

The InSight lander has detected more than 1,313 marsquakes in nearly 1,300 days on Mars. That’s about one per day. Marsquakes happen more often during the planet’s northern summer.

Marsquakes are probably caused by magma moving deep under the Martian surface. This is evidence that Mars is still volcanically active

The largest marsquake ever recorded was one of the last events detected by InSight before the lander’s mission ended in December 2022. The quake happened on May 4, 2022
