NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter flew 2,310 feet (704 m) on Flight 25 on April 8, 2022. This was the longest single-flight distance record for the rotorcraft. The previous record was 2,051 feet (625 m) on Flight 9 in July 2021.

Ingenuity has flown more than 50 times. It was built with many “off-the-shelf” components, such as smartphone processors and cameras.

Ingenuity’s other flight records include:

  • 169.5 seconds of flight time
  • 66 feet (20 m) altitude
  • 22.4 mph (36 kph) top speed
  • 9 miles (~14,492 km) distance flown
  • 24 meters (~79 ft) highest altitude

Ingenuity made its historic landing in Mars’ Jezero Crater alongside NASA’s Perseverance rover in February 2021.

As of September 2023, Ingenuity was still flying. It has completed 63 flights, far exceeding its original mission of five flights. Ingenuity has covered 41,024 feet (12,503 m) of ground and stayed aloft for nearly 98 minutes.

Ingenuity continues to provide scientific data and site scouting to Perseverance. NASA has to search for it occasionally. For example, Ingenuity went silent for six days in April. It flew again on April 22, but has stayed ground-bound since then

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California manages the Ingenuity helicopter’s mission. You can check NASA’s helicopter status updates.

Ingenuity’s 63rd flight was on October 19, 2023. It was designed for a demonstration period of 30 Mars sols (31 Earth days

Ingenuity’s last flight was on December 17, 2022. Ingenuity’s first flight was on April 19, 2021. It was the first powered, controlled flight on another planet

Here are some of Ingenuity’s other flight records:

  • Flight 59 Ingenuity broke its altitude record on this flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 20 meters (66 feet).
  • Flight 49 Ingenuity broke its speed record on this flight, flying at a record speed of 15 mph (6.5 meters per second).
  • Flight 35 Ingenuity broke its altitude record on this flight, reaching a new altitude record of 46 feet (14 meters).
  • Flight 63 Ingenuity’s latest sortie lasted 143 seconds.

Ingenuity’s highest altitude was 24 meters (79 feet) on its 61st flight on October 5, 2023. It reached its previous highest altitude of 18 meters (59 feet) on its 50th flight on April 13.

Ingenuity is 1.6 feet (0.49 meters) tall. It weighs 1.8 kilograms on Earth and 0.68 kilograms on Mars.

Ingenuity has four carbon composite legs. It has two 4-foot-long (1.2-meter-long) counter-rotating rotors that spin at roughly 2,400 rpm. The rotors have four specially made carbon fiber blades.
