ISRO’s “Bhoonidhi” matches NASA’s space standards. Bhoonidhi is the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Earth Observation (EO) Data Hub.  It provides access to remote sensing data from 44 satellites, including Indian and foreign sensors acquired since 1986. Bhoonidhi also facilitates the regional distribution of Sentinel and LandSat (8 & 9) data in India.

Radha Krishna Kavuluru, project manager at ISRO’s NISAR, said at India’s biggest AI conference, Cypher 2023, that ISRO is on par with NASA and any other international space agencies.

NASA has developed a wide range of standards to ensure the safety, reliability, and success of space missions. These standards cover various aspects of space exploration, spacecraft design, human spaceflight, security, hardware, and environmental considerations.

Here’s some related information about ISRO and NASA:

  • Goals: ISRO’s goal is to develop space technologies for India’s socio-economic benefit. NASA’s goal is to increase knowledge and human presence in space.
  • Budget: NASA has a larger budget and better infrastructure than ISRO.
  • Location: NASA is located in the US, while ISRO is headquartered in Bangalore, India.
  • Ranking: ISRO is ranked fifth in the world for space exploration capabilities, behind NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
  • Efficiencies: ISRO excels in efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Progress: ISRO is a young space agency

ISRO stands for the Indian Space Research Organisation.NASA stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

ISRO is administered by the Department of Space (DOS) in the Government of India. NASA is run by the United States Government Agency. Both agencies are independent.

ISRO is involved in science, engineering, and technology to benefit India and mankind. NASA is responsible for the civil space program, aeronautics research, and space research

ISRO’s previous name was the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR). INCOSPAR was established in 1962 by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Vikram Sarabhai, the founding father of the Indian space program, led INCOSPAR.

ISRO was formed on August 15, 1969, with an expanded role to harness space technology. The Government of India established the Space Commission and the Department of Space (DOS) in June 1972, and brought ISRO under DOS in September 1972.

ISRO’s headquarters are in Bengaluru, India.  ISRO has 25 other sub-centers. Three satellite launching facilities are located in: Bengaluru, Sriharikota Island, Thiruvananthapuram.

ISRO also has other centers in India, including:

  • Delhi, which has an ISRO branch office and the DOS Branch secretariat
  • Hyderabad, which has the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC)
  • Sriharikota, which has the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC)
  • Thiruvananthapuram, which has the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)

It even sets itself apart when measured against Earth observation datasets provided by NASA or ESA. “We are on par with NASA or any other international space agencies today,” said Radha Krishna Kavuluru, project manager at ISRO’s NISAR – proudly – at India’s biggest AI conference, Cypher 2023, held in Bengaluru.

Bhoonidhi is a portal developed by ISRO for disseminating Earth observation data. It provides access to a large archive of remote sensing data from 46 satellites, including Indian and foreign remote sensing sensors.

Users can download free satellite images and order priced satellite images. To order data from NRSC, users can:

  1. Fill in the prescribed data request form.
  2. Place the indent with NRSC/NDC.
  3. NRSC/NDC will place the request to the specific vendor.
  4. Upon receiving data from the vendor, it will be qualified and disseminated to the user.

Bhoonidhi matches NASA’s space standards.
