It is possible to stop an asteroid from hitting Earth, but it would be a difficult and expensive task. The key would be to deflect the asteroid away from its collision course with Earth.
We have no rockets in place to launch, and no impactor system for it to carry. If we detected an imminent asteroid tomorrow we would have no way to counter it.
The only way to do anything would be to find a way to deflect it while it was years away from us. NASA is actively researching and planning for ways to prevent or reduce the effects of a potential impact, should one be discovered.
Astronomers use ground-space-based telescopes to detect celestial bodies that could pose a threat of impact. In addition, infrared imaging tools help find objects that are too dark to see through the reflected lights
In July 2023, several asteroids approached Earth:
- 2023 LL: This 110-foot asteroid was traveling at 49,095 km/h.
- 2023 NT1: This 200-foot asteroid passed Earth on July 13 at an estimated 53,000 mph. It was spotted two days later.
- 2023 MD2: This 150-foot asteroid was discovered on May 12, 2023. It approached Earth on July 11.
- 2023 OE5: This asteroid was first seen on July 24 and last observed on July 30.
In early July 2023, asteroid 2022 AE1 flew by Earth at a distance of about ten million kilometers.
NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office monitors Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). In 2023, NASA issued warnings for the following asteroids:
- 2023 LL: This 110-foot asteroid was traveling at 49,095 km/h.
- 2023 MD2: This 150-foot asteroid was discovered on May 12, 2023. It approached Earth on July 11.
- 2023 HY3: This 100-foot asteroid was expected to make its closest approach to Earth on May 1.
In September 2023, multiple asteroids of various sizes approached Earth.These asteroids posed no threat and passed by our planet safely
NASA has not issued a warning about a dangerous asteroid that is bound to impact Earth. NASA’s calculations show that no known asteroids are currently on a path to hit Earth for at least 100 years. However, NASA is monitoring an asteroid that could collide with Earth on Valentine’s Day in 2046. NASA officials have warned that the odds of impact could be dramatically altered as more observations of 2023 DW are collected and additional analysis is performed.
The chances of a major impact in our lifetimes is, as far as we know, extremely small. Impacts by objects around 460 feet in diameter occur every 10,000 to 20,000 years, and a “dinosaur-killing” impact from a rock perhaps a half-mile across or larger happens on 100-million-year timescales( source google)
Other asteroids that are predicted to come close to Earth include:
- Apophis This asteroid is about 340 meters wide and is expected to pass Earth on April 13, 2029. It will come within 19,000 miles of Earth.
- Bennu This asteroid is about a third of a mile wide and is expected to pass Earth in 2135. It has a 0.037% chance of hitting Earth on September 24, 2182.
In July 2023, an asteroid named 2023 NT1 came close to Earth. The asteroid was about 200 feet (60 meters) in size and traveled at an estimated 53,000 mph (86,000 km/h). It passed closest to Earth on July 13, 2023. The Atlas Observatory in South Africa detected the asteroid on July 15, 2023, two days after it passed closest to Earth.
2023 NT1 was one of the largest asteroids to come so close to Earth in recent times. It could have done significant damage. For example, the Chelyabinsk meteoroid that fell to Earth in 2013 was only 20 meters across, but it injured 1,500 people and damaged buildings.
2023 NT1 came within a 60,000-mile radius of Earth, which is about 1/4 the moon’s distance to Earth
The asteroid 2023 NT1was first spotted on July 15, two days after it made its closest approach to Earth on July 13. In other words, by the time telescopes and scientists were first made aware of the rock’s existence, we were already in its rearview mirror
