From Artemis to dragonfly nasa upcoming missions

NASA has several upcoming missions, including the Artemis program and the Dragonfly mission: 

  • Artemis NASA’s first manned lunar mission since Apollo 17.
  • Dragonfly The first-ever mission to the surface of another ocean world. 

The Dragonfly mission will carry an instrument called the Dragonfly Mass Spectrometer.

After the Artemis program, NASA plans to launch a crewed mission to Mars. The “Moon to Mars” plan will use technology and research developed during the Artemis flights. The plan involves: 

  • Building a new space station in lunar orbit 
  • Establishing a habitable Moon base 

The Artemis program includes future yearly landings on the Moon. The fourth mission, Artemis 4, is scheduled for September 2028. It will launch four astronauts on a Space Launch System rocket and an Orion to the Lunar Gateway. 

The next step in the Artemis program is Artemis 2, which is scheduled to launch in November 2024. The mission will send four astronauts on a lunar flyby aboard an Orion spacecraft using a Space Launch System rocket. The mission will take between eight to ten days and collect flight test data on the Orion module and its capabilities, including its life support systems. 

Artemis 3 is scheduled for December 2025. The mission will launch two astronauts on an Orion capsule from KSC. They will rendezvous with Starship in lunar orbit, dock, transfer over to the vehicle, then take it down to the surface.

The Artemis program will accomplish the following: 

  • Land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon 
  • Explore more of the lunar surface than ever before 
  • Establish the first long-term presence on the Moon 
  • Prepare humanity for the long journey to Mars 
  • Help establish a sustainable lunar economy 

The Artemis program will use innovative technologies. The main parts of the program are: 

  • The Space Launch System (SLS) 
  • The Orion spacecraft 
  • The Lunar Gateway space station 
  • The commercial Human Landing Systems

NASA and its partners have planned Artemis 1 through Artemis 5 missions. Later Artemis missions have also been proposed. 

The Artemis program includes: 

  • Artemis 1 An uncrewed test flight that orbited and flew beyond the Moon 
  • Artemis 2 A crewed flight that will send four astronauts on a lunar flyby 
  • Artemis 3 A crewed lunar landing that will include a female astronaut and an astronaut of color 
  • Artemis 4 The first Artemis mission to use the Lunar Gateway space station 

NASA plans to launch four additional crewed missions to the lunar surface between 2025 and 2028.

Artemis 2 will be a manned mission. The four-person crew will include: 

  • Commander Reid Wiseman 
  • Pilot Victor J. Glover 
  • Mission Specialist Christina Koch 
  • Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen 

Artemis 2 will be the first crewed mission to test the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft. The mission will fly the Orion module 8,889 km beyond the Moon, complete a lunar flyby, and return to Earth. It will be the first mission to carry humans to the moon’s vicinity since 1972. (Source google)

The Artemis 2 mission is expected to last about 10 days. The mission will take a free-return trajectory, forming a figure-eight around Earth and the Moon. 

The Artemis 2 mission will test NASA’s foundational human deep space exploration capabilities, including: 

  • The SLS rocket 
  • The Orion spacecraft 
  • The Orion’s life support systems 
  • A new, high-definition optical communication suite that uses lasers to send data and videos to Earth 

Artemis 2 will be the last test flight before the Artemis 3 crewed moon landing mission in 2025.

NASA’s long-term goal is to establish a permanent base on the Moon to facilitate human missions to Mars. NASA views Artemis as a stepping stone to Mars. The agency believes that the skills and knowledge gained from the moon program will help it get astronauts to Mars by the late 2030s or early 2040s.

Yes, SpaceX is developing the first commercial human lander for the Artemis program. NASA awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract in 2021 to develop and build the lunar lander. The lander is a variation of the giant Starship rocket. 

SpaceX will provide the human landing system (HLS) for Artemis 3 and 4. The HLS will land American astronauts near the South Pole of the Moon. Before it can be used on a real mission, SpaceX must perform at least one demo showing it can land Starship safely on the lunar surface. 

SpaceX will also provide a second crewed landing demonstration mission in 2027 as part of NASA’s Artemis IV mission. ( source google)
