Bouncy castles and balloon animals on the moon The case for inflatable habitats

The European Space Agency (ESA) has proposed an “Inflatable Moon Base” that would be made up of donut-shaped inflatable habitats. The habitats would be semi-buried near the moon’s poles. They would be surrounded by solar mirrors that could direct sunlight into greenhouses.

The 2024 BIG Idea Challenge is a NASA competition where collegiate teams design habitats that incorporate inflatable components. The components can include towers, gantries, antennas, soft robotics, actuators, connectors, deployment mechanisms, airlocks, and temporary shelters.

Other concepts for inflatable habitats on the moon include:

  • Moon Village: A settlement made up of inflatable modules
  • Bouncy Castles in Space: A project that proposes rapid pressurization of flexible actuators positioned at the bottom of lunar habitats

The Case for Inflatable Habitats. Every year, NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-Changing (BIG) Idea Challenge invites student innovators to build and demonstrate concepts that can benefit future human missions to the Moon and beyond

Inflatable habitats can offer protection against harsh conditions on the moon. When inflated, they can expand to become many times their stowed volume.

Here are some bouncy animals on the moon:

  • Balloon animals
  • Bouncy castles
  • Jumping and riding horse bouncing horse hopper animal toy
  • Moon animal printed hop-hop baby bouncer
  • Moon AYAMOO bouncy deer horse bouncing animal toy with air pump
  • Super bouncing moon crater texture ball bounce ball
  • Jumping horse space hopper, ride-on bouncy animal inflatable

Jan Wörner, Director General of the European Space Agency, has a bold new vision for space exploration. “My intention is to build up a permanent base station on the Moon,” he tells Euronews from the agency’s main control room in Darmstadt. “Meaning that it’s an open station, for different member states, for different states around the globe.”( source google)

The Moon Village concept is a lunar settlement that aims to create a sustainable environment for human settlement on the moon. The concept includes a variety of activities, such as:

  • Automatic and robotic activities
  • Human-tended operations
  • Human settlement

The Moon Village concept is intended to:

  • Create an environment where international cooperation and the commercialization of space can thrive
  • Encourage collaboration between countries and communities
  • Provide access to permanently shadowed craters near the South Pole

The Moon Village concept includes:

  • Inflatable structures
  • Regolith-based protective shells
  • Workspaces
  • Living quarters
  • Environmental control and life support systems

The Moon Village concept is designed to be realized with existing technologies and those emerging in the near future. There is no definitive timeline for the project.

Moon Village is a concept that seeks to transform the unprecedented international cooperation in space exploration and the new approaches for lunar exploration and exploitation into a set of concrete actions, creating an environment where both international cooperation and the commercialization of space can thrive

The Moon Village Association (MVA) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that was founded in 2017. The MVA is based in Vienna, Austria.

The MVA’s mission is to create a global forum for the development of the Moon Village. The MVA acts as a forum for stakeholders such as governments, industry, academia, and the public. The MVA also fosters cooperation for existing or planned global moon exploration programs.

The MVA has approximately 150 members from 34 countries. The members represent a diverse array of technical, scientific, cultural, and interdisciplinary fields.

The MVA partners with non-space organizations to promote international discussions and formulation of plans to foster the implementation of the Moon Village. The MVA is also creating international, national, and regional networks to engage civil society around the world.

The Moon Village Association (MVA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) collaborated on the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The MVA and ISRO conducted a global video competition for students.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched on August 23, 2023. The mission’s primary objective was to land a lander and rover in the highlands near the south pole of the Moon. The mission also aimed to investigate “permanently shadowed regions” near the South Pole for potential water-ice and resources.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully touched down on the moon, making India the fourth country to achieve this feat. The mission also measured the Moon’s plasma density, providing insights into its unique environment and interactions with the cosmos.
