Scientists say that solar maximum will arrive sooner and last longer than previously expected. The peak of activity, known as “solar maximum”, is now predicted to occur between January and October 2024. This is earlier, stronger, and will last longer than estimates made in 2019.

Explanation

  • Solar maximum The peak of activity when the sun’s magnetic poles flip. The sun’s magnetic field is strong and organized at solar minimum, with two clear poles like a normal dipole magnet.
  • Solar minimum The sun grows quiet again after solar maximum.
  • Sunspots The number of sunspots peaks during solar maximum. In July, the sun had 159 sunspots and in August it had 115.
  • Wildlife A more active solar maximum could disorient animals that rely on Earth’s magnetic field to navigate, such as large whales and migrating birds.

Solar maximum will arrive sooner and last longer than previously expected, say scientists. “It’s a pretty significant change.” The sun will reach the peak of its current activity cycle in 2024, one year earlier than previous estimates, according to experts at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) (source google )

During a solar maximum, the sun’s activity peaks.  The sun’s magnetic field reaches its strongest and most dynamic point. This increased activity can cause extreme space weather events, including: Solar flares, Eruptions, Auroras, Radiation storms.

Other things that can happen during a solar maximum include:

  • Power outages
  • Satellite malfunctions
  • Communication disruptions
  • GPS receiver malfunctions

The increased energy output of solar maxima can impact Earth’s global climate. Recent studies have shown some correlation with regional weather patterns. The temperature on Earth also increases.

Solar maximum can last for years. The solar cycle, which includes solar maximum, usually lasts 11 years. However, the duration can vary from 9 to 14 years

The solar maximum occurs roughly in the middle of each solar cycle. The solar maximum for Solar Cycle 25 is predicted to occur between January and October 2024. The maximum number of sunspots is expected to be between 137 and 173.

We are entering the solar maximum of Solar Cycle 25. Solar Cycle 25 began in December 2019. The sun has been increasing its sunspot and flare activity for the past few years.

The solar maximum for Solar Cycle 25 is predicted to occur between January and October 2024. The maximum number of sunspots is expected to be between 137 and 173.

The last solar maximum occurred in April 2014. It was the weakest cycle in 100 years, with sunspots peaking at 114.

The current solar cycle, number 25, started in 2019. The sun has been slowly ramping up its sunspot and flare activity for the past few years. The updated prediction calls for Solar Cycle 25 to peak between January and October of 2024, with a maximum sunspot number between 137 and 173.

Solar maximums occur every 11 years on average, but can take up to 14 or 15 years.  The solar cycle is the sun’s magnetic activity that manifests in the number of sunspots, solar flares, and eruptions.  During solar maximum, large numbers of sunspots appear, and the solar irradiance output grows by about 0.07%. Large solar storms often occur during solar maximum.

The solar cycle can vary from 9 to 14 years. The solar cycle minimum before cycle 25 is expected to be long and deep.
