The Galactic 05 mission was a research mission launched by Virgin Galactic on Thursday, November 2, 2023. The mission was Virgin Galactic’s sixth spaceflight in six months.

Virgin Galactic is a company that develops commercial spacecraft. Their suborbital spacecraft are air launched from beneath a carrier airplane known as White Knight Two

Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft is called SpaceShipTwo, or VSS Unity. It’s a reusable rocket-powered space plane that’s designed for space tourism. Virgin Galactic’s first spaceflight was in 2018 with the VSS Unity. 

SpaceShipTwo is manufactured by The Spaceship Company, a California-based company owned by Virgin Galactic. The SpaceShip Company builds a family of space vehicles called SpaceShipTwo. Virgin Galactic owns and operates the first five SpaceShipTwo vehicles. 

SpaceShipTwo is air-launched from beneath a carrier airplane called White Knight Two. The carrier airplane takes off like a regular airplane from an airport runway.

Virgin Galactic has launched three commercial missions in less than three months.

Virgin Galactic also launched two test flights with Unity this year, one each in April and May.

The Galactic 05 mission reached an apogee of 54.2 miles. The spaceship took off at 9:00 AM MT, reached an altitude of 44,701 ft, and landed at 9:59 AM MT. The spaceship’s top speed was Mach 2.96

Virgin Galactic flights can last 2–3 hours. The company’s first commercial flight was 75 minutes long. The first flight carrying private tourists was expected to reach the edge of space in about an hour. 

Virgin Galactic’s flights reach around 360,000 feet (110 km). The rocket ship’s portion of the flight lasts about 15 minutes. At their peak altitude, the crew experiences around four minutes of weightlessness

Virgin Galactic’s first commercial spaceflight was dedicated to research in the bio-medical field, thermo food dynamics, and sustainable materials. The VSS Unity carried 13 research payloads. 

Virgin Galactic’s first commercial flight was a 75-minute suborbital ride to the edge of space. The trajectory allowed passengers to experience several minutes of weightlessness at an altitude high enough to see the Earth’s curvature

Yes, Virgin Galactic has sent people to space. In 2018, Virgin Galactic reached space for the first time, sending two co-pilots to an altitude of 51 miles.  In 2021, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and three other employees rode on a flight as passengers. This was the first time a spaceflight company founder had traveled on his own ship into outer space.
