Surprise discovery reveals a new source of evaporation

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) discovered that light can cause water to evaporate without heat. This finding challenges our understanding of the evaporation process.

The researchers were initially skeptical about this finding, but after experimenting themselves, they realized that another force must be at work. They found that producing light without heat using a flow of photons allowed liquid water to evaporate in the laboratory.

Light can evaporate water up to three times faster than the theoretical limit based on heat alone. This finding could improve our understanding of natural phenomena or boost desalination systems.

Digging further, the team found that the production of light without heat, using a flow of photons, can evaporate liquid water in the lab. This is a fascinating finding because while liquid water has a knack for absorbing heat energy, it isn’t known to absorb much light.

Evaporation is the process of a liquid turning into a gas. It’s a key step in the water cycle.

Here are some examples of evaporation:

  • Puddles disappearing on a hot day
  • Wet clothes drying in the sun
  • Steam rising from a hot cup of coffee
  • Melting a cube of ice
  • Evaporating acetone used for removing nail polish
  • Sweat evaporating from the human body

Other examples of evaporation include:

  • The water level going down in a cup
  • Using a hairdryer
  • Ironing clothes by heating moisture
  • Floors and cars drying after cleaning
  • Hot tea getting cold
  • Drying of a mopped floor
  • Drying of wet hair
  • Drying up of lakes and rivers

Evaporation and precipitation are both parts of the water cycle. Evaporation is the process by which liquid water turns into water vapor.Precipitation is the process by which water in the atmosphere falls back to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail

Evaporation occurs when liquid water gains heat energy and turns into a gas. Evaporation can be seen when puddles disappear on a hot day or when wet clothes dry in the sun.

Precipitation occurs when water vapor condenses in the atmosphere to form clouds and precipitation. Precipitation falls to the land as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

As average temperatures at the Earth’s surface rise, more evaporation occurs, which increases overall precipitation.

Evaporation is a type of vaporization. Vaporization is when a substance goes from a liquid or solid to a gas. Evaporation is a form of vaporization that usually happens on the surface of liquids.

Evaporation is an endothermic processbecause the water molecules absorb energy from the surroundings to escape from the forces binding the water molecules together. The molecules move and vibrate so quickly that they escape into the atmosphere as molecules of water vapor.

Evaporation is a process where the liquid state of matter is converted into a gaseous state of matter in the presence of heat. For example, when water is heated, it evaporates.
