On Thursday, November 3, 2023, Tampa International Airport (TPA) hosted the first air taxi test flight in Florida. The VoloCity air taxi from Volocopter, a German eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) vehicle manufacturer, took off in front of a crowd of about 300 media and invited guests at Sheltair Aviation at TPA. The demonstration was also the first urban air mobility test flight at a large U.S. airport. 

The air taxi, developed by Volocopter, is designed to bypass traffic congestion and provide quick intra-city travel. It’s an all-electric, crewed vehicle that’s sustainable, has no emissions, and is very quiet. 

The demonstration was attended by local and state politicians, such as Florida Department of Transportation assistant secretary for strategic development Kim Holland, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, and St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch
