NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) is a super-heavy-lift rocket that will return astronauts to the moon as part of the Artemis program. The SLS is the space agency’s newest and most powerful rocket to date. It’s the only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts, and cargo to the Moon on a single mission.

The SLS is set to evolve to its more potent Block 1B configuration with the advanced upper stage from Artemis IV onwards. This evolution will enable the rocket to launch 40% more payload to the Moon, including Artemis astronauts inside Nasa’s Orion spacecraft.

The next mission, Artemis 2, will take astronauts to the moon without landing on its surface. The crew of Artemis 3 is to land on the moon in 2025 at the earliest. Later missions envision a lunar space station and a sustainable presence on the lunar surface.

Artemis 1 successfully launched on Wednesday 16 November 2022 at 1:47am EST (6:47am GMT). Artemis 2 is scheduled for November 2024. Artemis 3 is scheduled for 2025.

The SLS is the only rocket capable of sending Orion, astronauts, and supplies to the Moon in a single mission, making it a pivotal player in Nasa’s space exploration endeavors.

Yes, Artemis 2 will be manned. The mission will launch four astronauts from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket:

  • Commander Reid Wiseman: NASA
  • Pilot Victor J. Glover: NASA
  • Payload Specialist Christina Koch: NASA
  • Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen: Canadian Space Agency (CSA)

Artemis 2 will be the first crewed flight test of the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft around the Moon. The mission will fly farther into space than any humans since the Apollo program.

Artemis 2 will include three astronauts from NASA and one from the Canadian Space Agency. Glover, Koch, and Hansen are to be the first person of color, woman, and non-American to go beyond low Earth orbit respectively.

Artemis 2 is scheduled to launch in November 2024. However, the exact date is yet to be confirmed. In March, the target date was announced as late November 2024.

The Artemis program’s goals include:

  • Scientific discovery
  • Technology advancement
  • Learning how to live and work on another world
  • Preparing for human missions to Mars
  • Establishing a long-term presence on the Moon

The Artemis missions will collaborate with commercial and international partners. 31 countries have signed the Artemis Accords, including the U.S., the U.K., Japan, Italy, Canada, and Brazil. Nigeria and Rwanda became the first African countries to sign the accords in December 2022.
