Oops a astronaut lost his tool box during space walk

In November 2023, NASA astronauts accidentally lost a tool bag during a spacewalk:

  • What happened: While working on a repair job, one of the astronauts dropped a tool bag.
  • How it was found: Flight controllers spotted the bag using external station cameras.
  • What happened next: Mission Control analyzed the bag’s trajectory and determined that the risk of recontacting the station was low. The tools were not needed for the remainder of the spacewalk.

Astronauts use tethers to keep tools from floating away. They tether their tools to their spacesuits

Orbital OopsyFortunately, the tools “were not needed for the remainder of the spacewalk,” allowing the two astronauts to return back inside. More importantly, the bag’s trajectory meant it was unlikely to “recontact” — or smack into — the space station, meaning the accident hopefully won’t be a big deal.

Astronauts also use a protocol called “make before you break” to remember to hook each tool down before they lose contact with it

If an astronaut loses something during a spacewalk, they may try to retrieve it before it drifts too far away. If they can’t, they report it to Mission Control so that it can be cataloged and tracked.

Astronauts are also constantly attached to the ISS with a retractable 85ft (26m) braided steel tether. All astronauts that go on spacewalks have a special jetpack strapped to their back as a backup safety measure. If the tether should ever fail, the jetpack should allow the astronaut to carefully propel themselves over to the International Space Station again

Other items that have been lost during spacewalks include:

  • Fabric shield In March 2017, NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson and Shane Kimbrough accidentally lost a fabric shield while on a spacewalk. The shield was needed for the International Space Station and provided a barrier from extreme temperature changes.
  • Debris shield bag In March 2017, a 1.5m (5ft) debris shield being installed on the International Space Station floated away during a spacewalk.
  • Needle-nose pliers In November 2007, astronaut Scott Parazynski accidentally lost a set of needle-nose pliers while repairing a damaged solar array.
  • Glove In 1965, during the first American space walk, Gemini 4 astronaut Edward White lost a glove.

Other items that have been lost during spacewalks include: Spatula, Camera, Toolbag.
