Neuralink is a neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The company was founded in 2016 by Elon Musk and a team of seven scientists and engineers. Neuralink’s goal is to help people with paralysis communicate by allowing them to remotely control devices using brain activity. In the future, Neuralink may also help enhance user memory and cognitive abilities, restore a user’s motor, sensory, and visual functions, and treat neurological disorders.

Neuralink’s device is a brain implant, outfitted with 1,024 electrodes, that can pick up signals from a whole lot of neurons. The more electrodes you’ve got, the more neurons you can listen in on, and the more data you’ll get. The procedure involves inserting threads, each 1/14th the diameter of a human hair, into the brain. These threads are lined with 16 electrodes.

Neuralink is looking for participants for its first-in-human clinical trial.  The trial is for people with quadriplegia, or paralysis in all four limbs, due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  They must also be at least 22 years old.  The ideal candidate would be an adult under 40 years of age.

The six-year-long study will involve 18 months of at-home and clinic visits followed by follow-up visits over five years. Interested people can sign up in the patient registry on Neuralink’s website.

The study will use a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move. The initial goal is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone

Neuralink claims that its technology could treat a number of conditions, including:

Paralysis, Blindness, Mental illness, Neurological conditions, Alzheimer’s and dementia, Parkinson’s, Autism, Schizophrenia, Tinnitus, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Brain injuries

Neuralink also claims that its technology could restore neural activity inside the body, allowing those with spinal cord injuries to move limbs.( source google)

Yes, Neuralink received FDA approval for its first human clinical trial on May 25, 2023. The company is recruiting patients with paralysis for its six-year study. ( source google)

Neuralink’s neural device is intended to allow people with paraplegia to regain movement and restore vision to those born blind. The company also hopes that a person would potentially be able to control a mouse, keyboard, or other computer functions like text messaging with their thoughts.

Neuralink has won US approval to test its device in humans. The six-year-long study will include 18 months of at-home and clinic visits followed by follow-up visits over five years. Interested people can sign up in the patient registry on Neuralink’s website( source google)

Neuralink’s chip is about the size of a coin and would be surgically inserted into the brain using robotics by neurosurgeons. The chip contains a lot of tiny wires, and each wire is reportedly 20 times thinner than human hair( source google)

Neuralink has created a surgical robot, especially designed to embed the implant and its 64 ultra-thin flexible connected threads upon which are 1,024 electrodes that record neural activity. The device is then connected to a computer, allowing for communication between the brain and the machine( source google)

Neuralink’s goal is to help people with paralysis communicate by allowing them to remotely control devices using brain activity. In the future, Neuralink may help enhance user memory and cognitive abilities, restore a user’s motor, sensory and visual functions as well as treat neurological disorders.

Other types of microchips can be implanted in humans for a range of purposes, including:

Identification, Contactless payments, Criminal record, Medical history, Medications, Address book. ( source google)
