1st black hole ever imaged by humans has twisted magnetic fields and scientists are thrilled. “The unprecedented Event Horizon Telescope observations are allowing us to answer long-standing questions about how black holes consume matter.

The first black hole ever imaged by humans is M87*, a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87. The Event Horizon Telescope captured the first image of the surrounding environment of a black hole. The black hole is 54 million light-years away from Earth and has a mass equivalent to about 6.5 billion suns. 

The black hole contains twisted magnetic fields. Scientists say that these magnetic fields may deprive M87’s black hole of matter, launching it into space as highly collimated (or parallel) jets that blast out at almost the speed of light. The constantly rotating light around M87* is also known as circular polarization.

Scientists confirmed the first evidence of a black hole spinning by studying the black hole’s jets

  • Jet movement Researchers stitched together images from observatories worldwide and found that the black hole’s jets were in motion. 
  • Jet ticking Astronomers studied M87* using a global network of radio telescopes from 2000 to 2022 and found that the black hole’s jets were ticking back and forth like metronomes marking out an 11-year cycle. 
  • Jet tilting Researchers watched the radio jet of the black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87 and were able to watch it tilt, a movement that confirms the black hole’s spin. 

The jet is likely produced by the fact that the accretion disk around the black hole doesn’t spin as fast as the black hole itself. The jet’s movement indicated a misalignment between the black hole’s spin axis and the accretion disk, leading the jet to move like a spinning top. 

Since black holes don’t have surface features, the only way you can determine black hole spin is by its torsional effect on space and time and how that affects nearby light, gas, and dust.
