The SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, has received a $200 million gift from Franklin Antonio for research in the search for life beyond Earth. The gift will impact all research domains of the SETI Institute.

The SETI Institute, or Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is an organization spearheading the hunt for life. SETI Institute President & CEO Bill Diamond said, “This gift will propel scientific research in the search for life”.

The SETI Institute, a non-profit scientific research organization based in Mountain View, Calif., on Thursday announced a philanthropic gift of $200 million from the estate of Franklin Antonio, a supporter of the work of SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) for more than 12 years.

The newest endowment will help fund SETI’s six key science disciplines: astronomy and astrophysics; exoplanets; planetary exploration; astrobiology; climate and bio-geoscience; and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

“Guided by our core mission and Franklin Antonio’s vision, we now have the opportunity to elevate and expedite our research and make new discoveries to benefit all humanity for generations to come,” said SETI Institute President & CEO Bill Diamond. “In his memory, the SETI Institute will continue its pursuit of one of the biggest and most profound questions in all of science, a question as old as humanity itself – are we alone in the universe?”

SETI stands for “search for extraterrestrial intelligence“. It’s a general term for scientific searches for intelligent life outside of Earth. For example, SETI research can involve monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions from civilizations on other planets.

The Berkeley SETI Research Center is based at the University of California, Berkeley. The center conducts experiments searching for optical and electromagnetic transmissions from intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations.

UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process on March 31, 2020. The program stated that they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results.

The Allen Telescope Array (ATA) is a centimeter-wave array that pioneers the Large-Number Small-Diameter concept of building radio telescopes. Compared to a large dish antenna, large numbers of smaller dishes are cheaper for the same collecting area
