InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of India’s top airline IndiGo, plans to launch an all-electric air taxi service in India by 2026. The service will launch with the purchase of up to 200 electric air vehicles. 

The collaboration with U.S.-based Archer Aviation plans to secure funding for up to 200 of Archer’s Midnight aircraft dedicated to operations in India. The partnership also plans to engage local business partners for operating Archer’s aircraft and constructing vertiport infrastructure.

Some say that a future with large numbers of electric air taxis is likely still decades off. Others say that a full-fledged competitive air taxi market could emerge in at least one location by 2028. 

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has a regulatory timeline for electric air taxis to start flying by 2028. Some manufacturers, such as Silicon Valley’s Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation, have 2025 as their target. Honeywell predicts that air taxis could be available in select cities by 2023-2025.

However, air taxis won’t come cheap. While prices could trend downward as the industry matures, it’s likely that air taxis will simply be a helicopter service for the rich during the first few years of adoption.
