SpaceX said that Starship could launch as early as Friday, November 17, pending final regulatory approval. SpaceX launched its first Starship test flight in April, but it exploded shortly after liftoff.

The upcoming test involves launches with both Starship and the Super Heavy Booster. A modified version of the vehicle is set to serve as a lunar lander to deposit astronauts on the lunar surface.

The FAA still has to issue a launch license.

Starship is set to launch on November 17, pending regulatory approval,” SpaceX announced on social media on Friday night. On April 20, Starship had its maiden flight in its complete configuration from Texas

SpaceX’s Starship 25 (S25) was lifted into the chopsticks lifting mechanism at Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas on September 5, 2023. In October, SpaceX performed tests and rehearsals on the launchpad in Texas.

The first orbital flight test of Starship was on April 20, 2023 at 13:33 UTC. Three engines were disabled during the launch sequence and several more failed during the flight. The rocket didn’t separate from its colossal booster and flipped as it fell in the air back toward Earth.

Other Starship flight tests include:

  • August 27, 2019: Single Raptor engine, SN6
  • August 4, 2020: Used a single Raptor engine, SN27

SpaceX said on November 3, 2023 that its Starship super rocket is ready to fly again. The company is hoping to re-launch Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, next week.

SpaceX is developing the Starship system with a fully-reusable two-stage launch vehicle. It’s intended to replace all of its other launch vehicles and spacecraft for satellite delivery and human transport. Eventually, it could support flights to the Moon and Mars.

SpaceX has built several prototypes for the upper stage and launched them a total of nine times. The launch of Starship SN15 on May 5, 2021 completed a successful high-altitude flight test of six minutes.

Yes, Starship is designed to be fully reusable.  Both stages of the vehicle will be recovered after a mission and reused.  The booster would fly back to its landing site, slowing itself down by firing its engines, as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket does. Starship would be caught by a pair of chopstick-like arms that extend from the launchpad.

Starship is the second stage of the Starship system. The Super Heavy booster is the first stage of Starship. The vehicle is about 69 meters tall, 9 meters wide, and has the capacity to hold about 3,400 tons of propellant. It is capable of carrying crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Yes, Starship is designed to land back on Earth so it can be reused. Both the Starship and the Super Heavy booster can land back on Earth.

To land on bodies with an atmosphere, such as Earth and Mars, Starship first slows by entering the atmosphere via a heat shield. To land on bodies without an atmosphere, such as the Moon, Starship will fire its engines to slow down.

The Super Heavy booster is powered by 33 Raptor engines using sub-cooled liquid methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (LOX). It’s fully reusable and will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere to land back at the launch site.

The Starship has a dry mass of 85 tons and has a propellant capacity of 1200 tons. The ascent payload capacity is 150 t to low earth orbit and it has a return capacity of 50 t.

Yes, Starship is designed to carry humans. It’s intended to enable long-duration interplanetary flights for a crew of up to 100 people.  Starship is designed to carry passengers to the moon and Mars as part of NASA’s Artemis program.  NASA plans to use Starships to land astronauts on the moon during Artemis III and IV, two upcoming missions which could come as early as 2025 and 2028, respectively.

Starship is also designed to help enable satellite delivery, the development of a Moon base, and point-to-point transport on Earth. SpaceX plans to use Starship vehicles as tankers, refueling other Starships to allow missions to geosynchronous orbit, the Moon, and Mars.

The Starship is designed to transport crew and cargo to a variety of destinations, including Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and potentially beyond. It is intended to enable long duration interplanetary flights for a crew of up to 100 people.

SpaceX plans to use Starship vehicles as tankers, refueling other Starships to allow missions to geosynchronous orbit, the Moon, and Mars. Starship will also help enable satellite delivery, the development of a Moon base, and point-to-point transport here on Earth.

SpaceX aims to use Starship as a workhorse heavy-lift launcher, as well as for deep space missions. NASA also plans to use the Starship rocket to land Artemis 3 astronauts on the moon
