
NASA stands behind SpaceX after the company lost contact with its Starship mega rocket during a test flight. The rocket is part of NASA’s plans to return astronauts to the moon.
SpaceX lost contact with the rocket about 10 minutes after liftoff. The rocket is nearly 400 feet tall and is the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. It’s designed to carry people to the moon and Mars.
NASA chief Bill Nelson said the test was an “opportunity to learn — then fly again”. He added that each test is a step closer to putting the first woman on the moon.

The Starship spacecraft was successfully launched from the company’s Starbase launch site in Texas, but contact was lost roughly 10 minutes after lift-off. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has congratulated Elon Musk-owned SpaceX over the launch of unmanned Starship spacecraft.
SpaceX’s Starship rocket and spacecraft were lost in two explosions on Saturday. The rocket reached space and completed some of its main test objectives, such as the hot-staging process. However, SpaceX lost contact with the rocket after an explosion. SpaceX officials said it appears the ship’s self-destruct system blew it up over the Gulf of Mexico.
The launch was a major step for the rocket, which NASA plans to use to land astronauts on the moon. SpaceX said it successfully completed a number of milestones that will help it continue the rapid development of the world’s most powerful rocket.
The Starship rocket reached an altitude of 148 kilometers, or 91 miles, which is above the 62-mile boundary of space. The upper-stage Starship spacecraft appeared to be heading east to circle the planet and splash down in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. However, SpaceX lost contact with the rocket after the flight termination system detonated.

SpaceX owner Elon Musk said that an internal fire damaged the rocket’s engines and computers, causing it to stray off course. The automatic-destruct command was activated about 40 seconds too late.
The first Starship launch in April 2023 had several problems, including:
- Launch site damage
- Engine failures
- Fires
- Steering issues
- Tumbling
- Maximum altitude of 24 miles
The second launch had:

- Engines disabled during launch
- Engines failing during flight
- Loss of thrust

SpaceX’s Starship launch was a partial success. The rocket successfully lifted off and separated from its first-stage booster. It also reached an altitude of 91 miles, which is above the boundary of space. However, the rocket didn’t achieve the test launch’s main objective of splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
SpaceX considered the mission a success if the rocket made it past hot staging. The rocket did make it past that point, but it failed shortly after. SpaceX lost contact with the rocket and stopped receiving data about 12 minutes into the flight. The automated flight termination system then triggered, aborting the flight.
