The ILMT is the first liquid mirror telescope designed for astronomical observations. It has a rotating mirror made of a thin layer of liquid mercury to collect and focus light. The telescope is designed to survey the strip of the sky passing overhead each night. It will help astronomers detect transient objects such as: Supernovae, Gamma-ray bursts, Gravitational lenses, Space debris, Asteroids.
The ILMT is located at an altitude of 2450 meters. It is housed at the Devasthal Observatory campus of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES). ARIES is an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India

SN 2023af is an unidentified supernova discovered by the newly constructed International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT) in India. The discovery was made during the commissioning phase of the ILMT.
The supernova was discovered on January 2, 2023 at 21:52:51.744. It was further monitored with the ILMT and DOT facilities.
