Progress Docks to Station, Replenishes Crew

The Progress 86 spacecraft docked with the International Space Station’s Poisk module at 6:18 AM EST. The uncrewed spacecraft delivered almost three tons of food, fuel, and supplies to the Expedition 70 crew

The spacecraft launched on a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on August 22, 2023. It will remain at the orbiting laboratory for about six months. After that, it will undock and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere to dispose of trash.

The spacecraft launched on a Soyuz rocket at 4:25 a.m. EST Friday, Dec. 1 (2:25 p.m. Baikonur time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Progress is delivering almost three tons of food, fuel and supplies to the International Space Station for the Expedition 70 crew.

NASA provided live coverage of the launch and docking. The spacecraft carried about three tons of food, fuel, and supplies. 

The Progress 85 spacecraft is also known as Progress MS-24. NASA designated the mission as Progress 85, while Russia used the designation Progress MS-24. 

Docking is when two free-flying space vehicles join together. The first docking in space was in 1966 when the Gemini VIII docked with an unmanned target vehicle

Here’s how a space shuttle docks with the International Space Station (ISS): 

  1. Align the docking adapters of the two spacecraft 
  2. Jam them together to engage capture locks 
  3. Use a retractor to draw them together securely 

The docking system has a hard inner ring and a soft outer ring. The outer ring absorbs the docking energy. The final airtight connection is made by mechanical hooks that pull the two spacecraft together. 

The International Berthing Docking Mechanism (IBDM) captures a vehicle flying to the ISS. It then damps the relative motion between the vehicle and the ISS. The IBDM provides a structural pressurized connection between the two.

A space dock is a hypothetical space station that can repair or build spacecraft. It’s similar to a shipyard on Earth. 

The term “spacedock” is also used interchangeably with “drydock”.

In the Star Trek universe, Earth Spacedock is a fictional space station that orbits Earth. It was designed by David Carson and Nilo Rodis of Industrial Light and Magic in the 1980s. The original Earth Spacedock became the Fleet Museum. The new Earth Spacedock is larger and is also called Probert Station.

Spacecraft dock for a number of reasons, including: 

  • Refueling 
  • Resupplying 
  • Maintenance 
  • Transferring crew 
  • Constructing or resupplying a space station 
  • Testing 
  • Increasing capabilities 

Cargo transporters are berthed manually by a robotic arm on the International Space Station (ISS). Manned spacecraft dock directly in a computer-controlled process. 

The International Docking System Standard (IDSS) provides common design parameters for developers to create compatible docking systems. The IDSS is intended for use on crewed and autonomous space vehicles, and for missions ranging from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to deep-space exploration.

Docking a spaceship is a delicate and potentially dangerous procedure. The speed of the docking maneuver is extremely high, and corrections are difficult

The International Space Station (ISS) has five docking ports. The ISS’s docking speed is about 28,000 km/h. A spacecraft can arrive at the ISS as soon as four hours after launching from Earth

Docking can be temporary or partially permanent. For example, the Russian Soyuz and Progress vehicles can dock with the International Space Station. 

Berthing is better for more permanent attachments. For example, the Cygnus and SpaceX cargo dragon use the common berthing mechanism to attach to the ISS.

The first docking in space occurred on March 16, 1966. The Gemini VIII capsule, piloted by Neil Armstrong and David Scott, docked with an unmanned spacecraft called the Agena Target Vehicle. The docking took place at 22:14 (UTC)
