The solar storm of 1872 hit the earth generating auroras to the tropic of the poles

In February 1872, a solar storm known as the Chapman-Silverman storm caused auroras to be visible from the tropics to the poles. The storm was one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in history. It caused auroras to be seen in places like Bombay and Khartoum, which are near the equator. The storm also disrupted telegraph communications

The storm caused magnetic disturbances on Earth that were equal to or worse than the Carrington Event. The storm also disrupted navigation systems and created harmful geomagnetic induced currents in the power grid and pipelines.

A team of scientists from nine countries recently released an analysis of the storm. The analysis traced the storm’s solar origin and its widespread impacts on Earth

The solar storm of February 1872, known as the Chapman-Silverman storm, produced a global display of auroras visible near the equator in locations like Bombay and Khartoum. This extraordinary phenomenon disrupted telegraph communications, showcasing the vulnerability of even the 19th-century technology to solar storms

Auroras are not harmful to humans. They are a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with molecules in Earth’s upper atmosphere. The collisions produce flashes of light that fill the sky with color

Auroras are visible at altitudes of 60 to 250 miles above the Earth’s surface. They don’t produce any pollution or emissions that could harm humans or the environment. However, the electrically charged particles produced by auroras could have some negative effects on infrastructure and technology.

Auroras can sometimes interfere with communications. They can disrupt radio and radar signals, and intense magnetic storms can even disable communication satellites

Auroras, also known as the northern and southern lights, are caused by solar activity. Solar activity includes:

  • Solar flares: Explosions on the sun
  • Coronal mass ejections: Ejected gas bubbles
  • Solar wind: Streams out from the sun

The solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetic field, or magnetosphere, causing disturbances. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma

When charged particles from the sun collide with atoms in Earth’s atmosphere, the electrons in the atoms move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon, or light. This process creates the aurora.

Auroras have been observed on every planet in the solar system except Mercury. They have even been detected on a huge “rogue planet” 20 light years away

Plants grow towards light sources, so they can grow faster on one side if they aren’t rotated. If Aurora borealis gets dusty, it can’t access sunlight to create energy.

The sun provides energy to Earth, which drives weather and feeds plants. The sun’s influence on Earth is also a reminder that it provides more than just light and heat.

The Nitrogen Use Efficiency Indicator can help farmers apply nitrogen more precisely in food production. This can help minimize environmental impacts and improve crop yields

Auroras are not harmful to animals or humans. However, some say that animals can sense things that humans can’t. For example, dogs often bark and look at the sky during an aurora.

Auroras can affect animals in other ways:

  • Gray whales Strong solar storms and auroras can blind gray whales, which may use a magnetic sense to navigate.
  • Wolves Auroras can make wolves more aggressive and increase their detection range.
  • Navigation Geomagnetic storms can interfere with animals’ magnetic responses and navigation

Dogs will often look at the sky and bark during an auroral display, which suggests that other animals are also aware of them. Although we can’t be certain, it is well documented that there are things which animals can sense that humans can’t(full article source google)
