The Whale-SETI team from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute has been studying humpback whale communication systems. The team’s goal is to develop intelligence filters to help search for extraterrestrial intelligence. 

SETI is a scientific effort to detect electromagnetic signals that may indicate the existence of intelligent life. SETI projects use techniques such as radio transmissions and optical signals to look for signs of technological activity from other planets

In a flurry of exchanged messages, the scientists sent a “contact” call that drew Twain’s attention and had him circling their boat for around 20 minutes.

  • Migrations Humpback whales have some of the longest migrations of any mammal, with some populations swimming 5,000 miles (8,047 km) between breeding and feeding grounds. 
  • Protecting other species Humpback whales have been known to play with and protect other species such as dolphins, seals, smaller whales, and humans.
