From the Moon’s south pole to an ice-coveredocean world, several exciting space missions are slated for launch in 2024

The mission builds upon Artemis I, which sent an uncrewed capsule into orbit around the Moon in late 2022. Artemis II will put the astronauts into orbit around the Moon before returning them home. It is currently planned for launch as early as November 2024.

Several exciting space missions are scheduled for launch in 2024, including: 

  • Europa Clipper A NASA mission that will investigate Europa, which has strong evidence of an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy crust 
  • Artemis II A crewed launch that will take place in 2024 as part of NASA’s Artemis program 
  • VIPER A NASA rover that will launch to the Moon’s south pole in 2024 to study water ice 
  • Lunar Trailblazer A NASA orbiter that will launch in 2024 to advance our understanding of water across the Moon 
  • JAXA’s Martian Moon eXploration A mission that will launch in September 2024 
  • ESA’s Hera A mission that will launch in October 2024 

The launch window for the Artemis II mission opens on October 10, 2024 and lasts 21 days. The spacecraft will launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and arrive at the Jupiter system in 2030

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been mapping the moon’s south pole since 2009. The mission aims to determine if the region has enough resources to support a permanent crewed station. 

In 2025, NASA plans to land humans on the moon’s south pole for the first time in 50 years. The Artemis III mission will involve landing at a yet-to-be-determined site and searching for ice. 

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chose to land its Chandrayaan-3mission in the moon’s south pole region due to the availability of more resources for fuel. The ISRO aims to set up a space station by 2035

Some space missions scheduled for 2024 include: 

  • NASA’s Artemis 2: This mission will send four astronauts on a 10-day lunar flyby aboard an Orion spacecraft. The mission will be the first to send astronauts around the moon in nearly 50 years. 
  • NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer orbiter: This orbiter will launch in 2024 to study water across the moon. 
  • NASA’s VIPER rover: This rover will launch to the moon’s south pole in 2024 to study water ice. 
  • NASA-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR): This collaborative effort between NASA and ISRO is scheduled for launch in 2024. NISAR will be the first dual-band radar imaging satellite, providing critical data for Earth observation. 
  • JAXA’s Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM): This mission will land on the moon in January 2024. 
  • ISRO’s Gaganyaan uncrewed missions and SPADEX docking experiment: ISRO plans to launch these missions in 2024. 
  • ISRO’s INSAT 3DS: This mission is scheduled for a potential launch in January 2024.

  • Hera space mission: This mission will launch to the Didymos asteroid to study the effects of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test. 
  • EscaPADE mission: Rocket Lab will launch this mission to Mars in 2024.

  • ISS crew change: The official ISS crew will change throughout the year. 
  • Commercial flights to low-Earth orbit: More commercial companies are planning flights to low-Earth orbit in 2024.

Some say that space tourism has a future, especially if multimillionaires continue to invest in the sector. In 2019, Swiss investment bank UBS published a report which calculated that this industry may be worth $3 bn during the next decade. 

As space tourism becomes more popular and affordable, there may be a demand for long-term space stays and even space colonies. This could lead to the development of new technologies and infrastructure to support human habitation in space
