Spending Time in Space? Maximize Your Health with this Space Salad

This salad made up of soybeans, poppy seeds, barley, kale, peanuts, sweet potato and sunflower seeds could be the optimal meal for men on long-term space missions.

a salad made from soybeans, poppy seeds, barley, kale, peanuts, sweet potato, and sunflower seeds could be the ideal meal for men on long-term space missions.

The salad was developed by researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Nottingham in the U.K.. The ingredients are carefully measured and can be grown in small enclosures on a spacecraft.

Researchers found that this vegetarian meal provides the most efficient balance of maximal nutrients and minimal farming inputs.

Astronauts also exercise for about two hours every day to maintain their health. They use resistance exercise equipment for weight training, and aerobic exercise equipment such as treadmill and ergometer.

Astronauts also need to eat well and get enough sleep to stay healthy

Here are some other ways astronauts stay healthy in space:

  • Exercise Astronauts exercise for about two hours every day to prevent bone and muscle loss. They use exercise machines that have been adapted for space, including a stationary bike, a treadmill, and a weightlifting machine.
  • Sleep Astronauts need to attach themselves to something to keep from floating away while they sleep.
  • Mental health Medical, exercise, nutrition, psychological support, and engineering teams work together to maintain the physical, mental, and social well-being of humans in space.
  • Radiation A major health risk for astronauts in space is the exposure to high-energy radiation. In space, there is no atmosphere to protect astronauts from UV radiation, X-rays, gamma-rays, and cosmic-rays.

Today, the types and varieties of space food are quite close to the nutritional choices available terrestrially. Astronauts aboard the ISS are able to eat fresh vegetables, fruits, and heated soup for most meals

What is the ‘tasty’ space meal made up of? Researchers found that a vegetarian meal made up of soybeans, poppy seeds, barley, kale, peanuts, sweet potato and/or sunflower seeds provided the most efficient balance of maximal nutrients and minimal farming inputs

It is a “vegetarian salad” that researchers at ACS Food Science and Technology have designed for male astronauts’ who go on longer space missions. The “perfect space meal” is designed as the space agencies that plan for longer missions grapple with “the challenge of how to best feed people”, as per a statement from the American Chemical Society

Moreover, astronauts are working towards food sustainability in space. Future long-term missions will require growing food in a sustainable, circular way within the spacecraft or space colonies

Mars-bound astronauts will now enjoy the “perfect” space meal thanks to new research on nutritional, sustainable and tasty options for long-duration missions

Astronauts in space burn more calories than humans on Earth and require extra micronutrients, such as calcium, to stay healthy during extended exposure to microgravity,” according to the statement. “Additionally, future long-term missions will require growing food in a sustainable, circular way within the spacecraft or space colonies.”
