Astronomers have detected mysterious signals from deep space that could offer insights into the composition and energy of the universe. One signal is a Fast Radio Burst (FRB), a bright flash of radio light that lasts for a few milliseconds and originates from beyond the Milky Way

Another signal is a cosmic radio signal that has been detected every 22 minutes for over 30 years. Scientists have no idea what is causing it. 

Researchers say the most likely culprit is pulsars, neutron stars that blink and rotate like lighthouses. However, pulsars slow down as time passes, their pulses growing fainter with age until they eventually stop producing radio signals

In 2022, a paper concluded that a mysterious signal from the center of our galaxy is likely a blob of hot gas. The blob is held together by a strong magnetic field that accelerates particles, which emit radiation. The blob’s orbital distance from Sgr A* is similar to that of Mercury around the Sun. 

Astronomers have also detected unusual radio waves coming from the direction of the Milky Way’s center. The radio waves don’t fit any known pattern of variable radio source and could indicate a new class of stellar object. The signal’s most unusual property is its high polarization.

Last year, scientists discovered a “strange and persistent” radio burstfrom a far-off galaxy that sounded like a heartbeat. That signal lasted up to three seconds – about 1,000 times longer than average, according to a news release

The James Webb Telescope detected a signal from the Andromeda Galaxy that suggests the galaxy is transforming from a spiral galaxy to a ring galaxy. The signal is a reminder of the vast unknowns of the cosmos and could be a potential encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence

The Andromeda Galaxy is a neighboring galaxy with a core made up of a ring of old, red stars and a disk of young, blue stars. The disk is trapped within the gravitational field of a supermassive black hole. The Andromeda Galaxy also has around 400 globular clusters, each with millions of stars. 

In about 4.5 billion years, the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy. The two galaxies are gravitationally interacting with each other, causing them to fall toward each other at a rate of 37 miles per second.

Astronomers have detected a number of mysterious signals from deep space, including: 

  • Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) These are millisecond-long pulses of radio waves that appear to originate from outside the Milky Way. FRBs are considered mysterious because they happen so quickly that they’re hard to study. One FRB, known as FRB 20220610A, lasted only a millisecond but released the same amount of energy as the sun does over three decades. 
  • Ultra-long period magnetars These are rare neutron stars with powerful magnetic fields that can produce bursts of energy. 
  • Cosmic noise Also known as galactic radio noise, this is a physical phenomenon that can be detected using a radio receiver.

Here are some examples of alien signals:

  • Test extraterrestrial signal In 2023, a coded radio signal from Mars was transmitted to radio telescopes on Earth. 

In 1959, Cornell University physicists Philip Morrison and Giuseppe Cocconi speculated that any extraterrestrial civilization attempting to communicate via radio signals might do so using a frequency of 1420 megahertz.

Here are some other strange signals from space: 

  • Cosmic noise Also known as galactic radio noise, cosmic noise is a physical phenomenon that comes from outside of Earth’s atmosphere. It can be detected using a radio receiver, which converts radio waves into audible form. 
  • RPMJ1839-10 This signal is believed to be coming from around 15,000 light years away from Earth. It has been occurring at intervals and for a period of time that was previously thought to be impossible. 
  • Radio burst that sounds like a heartbeat This signal lasted up to three seconds, which is about 1,000 times longer than average. 
  • Mysterious object beaming radio waves This object has been detected every 22 minutes for more than 30 years. Signals from this type of cosmic object usually slow down over time.
