Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) is a private spaceflight to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission launched on January 18, 2024, at 4:49 PM EST from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission is expected to last about 14 days and is operated by Axiom Space
The all-European crew will conduct 30 experiments and public outreach during their 16 days in orbit. One investigation will look at the physiological and genetic responses to defense activation and immune function in tomatoes during spaceflight.
Ax-3 is the third private astronaut mission to the ISS by Axiom Space. The first mission flew in April 2022 and the second in May 2023
On the 18th January four private astronauts were launched to ISS on the Dragon spacecraft, propelled by the Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket. The private mission was the third such enterprise by Axiom Space, the first mission flew in April 2022 and the second in May 2023
The crew of Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) includes:
- Commander Michael López-Alegría A US and Spanish citizen, and the most prepared member of the crew. This will be his sixth trip to orbit.
- Pilot Walter Villadei A member of the Italian Air Force.
- Mission Specialist Alper Gezeravcı A pilot in the Turkish Air Force, and the first person from Turkey to fly to space.
- Mission Specialist Marcus Wandt A former Swedish Air Force pilot, and the second Swede to fly to space. Wandt is also the first member of the 2022 European Space Agency Astronaut Group to receive a spaceflight mission. The crew launched on January 18, 2024, aboard SpaceX’s Dragon Freedom spacecraft
Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) is the first all-European commercial astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission is a new opportunity for countries to join the international space community and access low-Earth orbit
The crew spent about 35 days training inside the Dragon spacecraft. They learned about orbital mechanics, how to live in microgravity, and conducted full mission simulations
The Axiom Orbital Segment is about 11 meters long and 4.2 meters in diameter at its widest point. The Axiom Hub module has living quarters for four crew members and space for research and manufacturing. The addition of a second Hub module increases the crew capacity to eight
Axiom Space aims to own and operate the world’s first commercial space station in the late 2020s
Axiom Space contracts with SpaceX to transport its astronauts to and from the ISS. Axiom’s Ax-3 mission is its third commercial spaceflight with SpaceX.
Axiom Space also uses these missions to help with its plans and designs for its own space station. In 2018, Axiom announced a program that involves chartering SpaceX hardware and paying NASA for services. The program set a price tag of $55 million per seat
Axiom Space was founded in 2016 by Michael T. Suffredini and Kam Ghaffarian. The company is led by Suffredini, who is the co-founder and President/CEO. Suffredini was NASA’s International Space Station Program Manager from 2005 to 2015.
Axiom Space is also known for partnering with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to develop the country’s first national astronaut program
