On January 22, 2024, India announced a $740 million National Quantum Mission (NQM) to be invested over eight years. The NQM is a visionary initiative that aims to develop expertise and capabilities in four areas of quantum technologies:
- Communications
- Computing
- Metrology and sensing
- Materials The NQM is expected to set up four mission hubs:
- Quantum computing
- Quantum communication
- Quantum sensing and metrology
- Quantum materials and devices The hubs will be consortia of academia, research and development labs, and industry. The NQM has the potential to make India’s Technology Development ecosystem globally competitive. It could benefit sectors such as communication, health, financial, and energy. The NQM was approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The goal is to nurture and scale up scientific and industrial R&D and create an innovative ecosystem in Quantum Technology.
India Announces $740 Million (US) National Quantum Mission, Plans Tech Hubs. India announced it’s investing Rs.6003.65 Crore (approximately $740 million USD) over an eight-year span, from 2023-24 to 2030-31 for its National Quantum Mission
The National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications (NM-QTA) is a five-year program that was launched in 2020 with a budget of Rs 8,000 crore. The Department of Science and Technology is responsible for implementing the NM-QTA
The NM-QTA’s mandate is to assess the state of technology and set directions for future technological development in India. The goal is to develop quantum computers with 50-100 qubits in about five years and accelerate to 1000 qubits and beyond in eight years.
The NM-QTA also aims to assess the state of technology and set directions for future technological development in India in important socio-economic sectors
The National Quantum Mission (NQM) aims to make India a leader in the quantum technology sector and promote economic growth. The NQM will focus on developing magnetometers and atomic clocks for precision timing, communications, and navigation
The NQM will also:
- Expand research and development The NQM will establish an innovative ecosystem for quantum technology within India.
- Scale up scientific and industrial R&D The NQM will accelerate Quantum Technology-led economic growth.
- Use a project-driven multi-disciplinary approach The NQM will foster fundamental discoveries, imaginative engineering, and entrepreneurial initiatives.
- Engineer and utilize the quantum features of photons and subatomic particles The NQM will build advanced sensors that boost the value added by these enterprises. The NQM will be implemented by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) under the Ministry of Science & Technology.
The National Quantum Mission (NQM) will establish four thematic hubs, or T-Hubs, to explore proposals for quantum communications and secure satellite communications:
- Quantum computing
- Quantum communication
- Quantum sensing and metrology
- Quantum materials and devices The hubs will be managed as section eight companies. The LPI will submit a detailed pre-proposal on behalf of the entire consortium and help set up the T-Hub. The NQM will also help develop:
- Satellite-based secure quantum communications between ground stations within India over a range of 2,000 km
- Long-distance secure quantum communications with other countries
- Inter-city quantum key distribution over 2,000 km
- Multi-node quantum network with quantum memories
India will be the sixth country to have a dedicated quantum mission after the US, Austria, Finland, France and China. New Delhi: The government today approved the National Quantum Mission to nurture and scale up scientific and industrial research and development in quantum technology
