Space Force Chooses its First “Guardian” to go to Space – Universe Today. U.S. Space Force Col. Nick Hague will serve as the pilot on NASA’s Space X Crew-9 mission aboard the Dragon spacecraft that will take him and his crewmates to the International Space Station

In February 2024, the US Space Force announced that Col. Nick Hague will be the first “Guardian” to go to space. Hague will pilot the Dragon spacecraft on NASA’s Space X Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in August 2024. Hague will be joined by three other astronauts: Commander Zena Cardman, Mission Specialist Stephanie Wilson, and Roscomos cosmonaut Mission Specialist Aleksandr Gorbunov

Guardians are all Space Force personnel, whether civilian or military. They ensure the safe and secure operations of critical systems for launch and on station

The Space Force is a military branch that conducts military operations in space. The Space Force’s mission is to protect and defend the US’s military capabilities and economic interests in space. The Space Force’s responsibilities include: 

  • Organizing, training, and equipping personnel 
  • Providing space capabilities to joint forces 
  • Managing space launch operations 
  • Providing space-based navigation, communication, electronic warfare, and reconnaissance 
  • Providing early warning of intercontinental missile launches The Space Force has advanced operations on land, in air, and in orbit. The Space Force’s responsibilities are carried out with unmanned spacecraft and ground bases

The Space Force is a separate branch of the armed services, but it’s organized under the Department of the Air Force. The Air Force is responsible for air warfare, air defense, and developing military space research. The Air Force also provides air services in coordination with other military branches

The Space Force is responsible for:

  • Space launch 
  • Satellite operations 
  • Surveillance of the space environment 
  • Satellite defense 
  • Some missile defense functions The Air Force is responsible for:
    • Gaining control of the air 
    • Carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions 
    • Providing support to land and naval forces 
    • Air superiority 
    • Global strike 
    • Rapid global mobility 
    • Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance 
    • Command and control 

In February 2024, the US Space Force announced that Col. Nick Hague will pilot the Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in August 2024 or later

Hague will join two NASA astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut on the mission, which is part of SpaceX’s ninth crew rotation to the ISS for NASA. Hague will serve as a flight engineer once he arrives at the ISS. 

Hague is a Kansas native who was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013. He has experience as a test pilot and in combat with the US Air Force.
