Toyota has a new water-based engine that uses water as fuel. The engine uses electrolysis to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, which are then recombined to release energy

Toyota has also produced a new water electrolyzer to produce hydrogen. Toyota has also filed a patent for a water-cooled hydrogen combustion engine. 

Most proposed water-fuelled cars rely on some form of electrolysis to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. However, because the energy required to separate the elements will always be at least as great as the useful energy released, this cannot be used to produce net energy

A water engine can also refer to:

  • A positive-displacement engine: A water engine is a positive-displacement engine that is driven by water pressure and looks similar to a steam engine. It has pistons and valves similar to a steam engine.

  • Genepax A prototype car that runs on nothing but water. It has an energy generator that extracts hydrogen from water poured into the car’s tank.

    • Hydrogen cannot contribute energy: Water itself cannot contribute any energy to the process.

Toyota’s water engine uses electrolysis to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. The process begins when high-voltage electrodes inside the water tank initiate electrolysis. The hydrogen is then stored in tanks and used to power the engine. 

The electrolysis process eliminates the need for external hydrogen storage, which results in a more compact and lightweight design. The hydrogen is then directed into the combustion chamber, where it ignites similarly to compressed natural gas

As of 2021, the Toyota Mirai is one of two publicly available hydrogen cars. The other is the Hyundai Nexo
