
On January 26, 2024, NASA shared an image of a “bridge of stars” that appears to connect two galaxies, Arp 295a and 295c. The image shows the two galaxies growing into each other, with a 250,000 light-year-long streamer of stars stretching from one galaxy to another. The streamer is surrounded by a milky-colored array of gas and dust.
The streamer is known as a tidal tail, which is an elongated stream of stars and interstellar dust that forms when two galaxies in a group circle each other. The pair of galaxies have been interacting since long before humans existed and will continue to interact for tens of millions of years. It’s not clear if the pair will eventually merge.
The bridge between the pair is faint in these images, but it’s there in the lower right corner of the Hubble image, and young bright blue stars highlight it. The bridge feeds gas back and forth between the galaxies, fuelling star formation. However, the same interactions can sometimes quench star birth
