Using a large, donut-shaped machine called a tokamak, the scientists sustained 69 megajoules of fusion energy for five seconds using only 0.2 milligrams of fuel. This amount of energy is enough to power 12,000 homes for the same amount of time.

In December 2022, South Korean scientists created an “artificial sun” using the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) fusion energy reactor. The reactor reached temperatures of 70 million degrees Celsius for 1,056 seconds, which is five times hotter than the sun.
