Musk envisions Mars as a backup to ensure the survival of civilization even if Earth becomes unsustainable. He also says, “Civilisation only passes the single-planet Great Filter when Mars can survive even if Earth supply ships stop coming”. 

SpaceX’s plan is to use a thousand Starships sent during a Mars launch window to send a million people to Mars. Proposed journeys would require 80 to 150 days of transit time, averaging approximately 115 days.

SpaceX plans to use martian rocks as a building material for their egg-shaped habitat. They will mine basalt from the surface, crush it, and mix it with a plant-based bioplastic to create a strong 3D printable material. A fully automated robot will lay down the concentric circles of rock and plant mixture, which will harden into a structure that is resistant to cosmic radiation

SpaceX plans to build a crewed base on Mars for an extended surface presence, which it hopes will grow into a self-sufficient colony. A successful colonization, meaning an established human presence on Mars growing over many decades, would ultimately involve many more economic actors than SpaceX

Here are some plans for SpaceX’s Starship:

• Starship Integrated Flight Test 3 (Starship-IFT-3) SpaceX’s next launch is scheduled for February 2024. As of January 2024, vehicles for Starship-IFT-3 have completed Static Fire testing. 
• Artemis missions NASA plans to use Starship to land astronauts on the moon during Artemis III and IV missions, which could come as early as 2026 and 2028, respectively. The plan is to loft almost 20 Starships, each carrying fuel, to fill a propellant depot in Earth orbit. A modified lander version of the spacecraft would then use the depot to fill its tanks and head to its lunar landing spot. 
• docking with Gateway SpaceX will demonstrate Starship’s capability to dock with Gateway, a small space station that will orbit the Moon. Gateway will support both lunar and deep-space exploration, accommodate four crew members, and deliver more supplies, equipment, and science payloads. 
• Inorbit satellite tuneups By 2026, SpaceX will refine the idea of using Starship for inorbit satellite tuneups like giving the Hubble Space Telescope a little refurbishment docking with other crafts or even fing satellites back to Earth. 

SpaceX’s Starship is designed to replace SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. Its goal is to colonize Mars, which SpaceX says is essential for the long-term survival of humans. 

Starship’s reusability will reduce launch costs, allowing more payloads and entities to access space. It will also help with: 

• Satellite delivery 
• Developing a Moon base

• Point-to-point transport on Earth SpaceX’s Starship will be capable of point-to-point transport on Earth, enabling travel to anywhere in the world in less than an hour.
