
According to media reports, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to deploy a rover and drone on Mars. The mission is a follow-up to ISRO’s Mangalyaan Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), which ended in 2022.
The mission will involve a lander that touches down on Mars and deploys a rover and a drone. The drone will be equipped with the Martian Boundary Layer Explorer (Marble), which will feature a suite of payloads for aerial exploration. Other payloads include a temperature sensor, humidity sensor, pressure sensor, wind speed sensor, electric field sensor, and a trace species and dust sensor.
The mission’s goal is to explore larger areas and access challenging terrains to more comprehensively understand the mysteries of Mars
According to ISRO’s plan, the project will see a lander touchdown on the red planet, which will deploy a rover as well as a drone, along the lines of the Ingenuity quadcopter of the American space agency NASA. The quadcopter recently completed its unprecedented three-year mission where it completed 72 flights.
The Marble mission is expected to help scientists understand Martian weather patterns and climate history. The mission will also aid future exploration missions and predict future conditions

To send an orbiter to Mars with less fuel, India uses a Hohmann Transfer Orbit, or Minimum Energy Transfer Orbit. This method involves launching a spacecraft from Earth in a direction tangential to Earth’s orbit, and encountering Mars tangentially to its orbit. The elliptical orbit requires less fuel and reduces launch weight.
Other ways India uses less fuel to send an orbiter to Mars include:
- Using a smaller rocket to put the spacecraft into Earth orbit first
- Keeping the payload size small, at 15 kilograms
- Using technologies it has used before
