Pioneering New Era of Interplanetary Civilisation, Musk Reveals Plans to Land Starship on Mars in 5 Years

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said in March 2024 that the Starship rocket will be on Mars within five years. The 400-foot-tall rocket will be used to send humans to the moon in 2026, and then eventually to Mars. Musk envisions a future where trips to Mars are routine, and that there will be lunar bases and cities on Mars

The Starship rocket will have a payload volume of about 1,000 cubic meters (35,000 cubic feet), which is 80 cubic meters (2,800 cubic feet) larger than the International Space Station’s pressurized volume. This may allow the Starship to transport larger payloads and more astronauts to other Earth orbits, to the moon, and to Mars

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has announced plans for the Starship rocket to reach Mars within the next five years. After a successful third test flight, Musk expressed confidence in the rocket’s capabilities, highlighting its potential for crewed Moon missions by 2026

On Sunday, Musk announced via social media that he aims to transport one million people to the Red Planet, stating that “civilisation only passes the single-planet Great Filter when Mars can survive even if Earth supply ships stop coming.”

Musk’s plan for Mars includes:

  • Unmanned ships: Sending ships to the surface of Mars
  • Humans: Sending people after the unmanned ships
  • Glass domes: Living in giant glass domes, like greenhouses
  • Warming: Warming the planet to make it habitable
  • Terraforming: Making Mars permanently more Earthlike, possibly through global warming

SpaceX plans to build a crewed base on Mars for an extended surface presence, which it hopes will grow into a self-sufficient colony. Musk has made many tentative predictions about the date of Starship’s first Mars landing, including 2029, but has since pushed back his target date to 2050.

However, some scientists say Musk’s plans are unrealistic. For example, there isn’t enough CO2 to transform the atmosphere, and Mars lacks a magnetic core that would keep the protective gasses from eroding over time

Mr Musk has repeatedly said that he wants to make humanity a “multi-planetary species” by establishing a colony on the Red Planet. In 2011, he stated that he would put a man on Mars in the next 10 years. However, in 2022 he revealed that he has pushed back his target date for reaching the Red Planet

Elon Musk has said that he wants SpaceX to have a colony on Mars by 2040, and that the first people to travel there will have to pay $500,000. He has also said that humans might first step on Mars as early as 2029

Musk has also said that he wants to establish a self-sustaining city on Mars, and that humans will eventually be a multi-planet species. He has also said that he wants to expand humanity’s presence beyond Earth to include lunar bases, Martian cities, and ventures among the stars.

Musk has also said that Starship could potentially reach the Moon within the next five years. He has also said that he wants to build a permanent base on the Moon

Tenets. As early as 2007, Elon Musk stated a personal goal of eventually enabling human exploration and settlement of Mars, although his personal public interest in Mars goes back at least to 2001 at the Mars Society. SpaceX has stated its goal is to colonize Mars to ensure the long-term survival of the human species

Musk believes that humans need to become a multi-planetary species to ensure the long-term survival of civilization. He has said that if humanity is able to start exploring other star systems, they may uncover evidence of long-dead one-planet civilizations. He also believes that if humans can’t figure out how to get beyond this planet, it’s “just a matter of time” before some similar, species-destroying event occurs.

Musk also wants to go to Mars for exploration. Mars has captured the imagination of many people for centuries, and the possibility of exploring and studying the planet in greater detail is a major motivation for Musk and his team.

Musk has also said that he plans to use the natural resources on Mars to transform its atmosphere, turning the planet into a warmer, wetter place like Earth. This process, called terraforming, relies on the premise that Mars has enough CO2 to do it.

Musk has said that being a spacefaring civilization is all about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has announced plans for the Starship rocket to reach Mars within the next five years. After a successful third test flight, Musk expressed confidence in the rocket’s capabilities, highlighting its potential for crewed Moon missions by 2026.

In March 2024, Elon Musk said that the Starship rocket, which is designed to land astronauts on the moon in 2026, will be on Mars within five years. He also said that an uncrewed version of Starship could land on Mars “within three or four years”. Musk has said that SpaceX will have multiple launch sites, including the Starbase facility in South Texas, the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and an “ocean-based-like” launch site.

Musk has also said that he wants to take one million people to Mars, and that “civilization only passes the single-planet Great Filter when Mars can survive even if Earth supply ships stop coming”. He has also said that one day, a trip to Mars will be like a flight across the country
