Space News: Scientists have revealed a big information. ISRO scientists analyzed the data obtained from earthquake indicating instruments of Chandrayaan-3, in which many important things have been revealed. According to this, seismic activity in the lunar soil may have been caused by past meteorite impacts or local heat-related effects.

Scientists said that to get more information from the data, study will have to be done on a larger scale.
The research published in the magazine Icarus contains a raw log of 190 hours of data recorded by the Lunar Seismic Activity Instrument (ILSA). ‘ILSA’ is one of the five important scientific instruments that Chandrayaan-3’s ‘Vikram’ lander and ‘Pragyan’ rover carried with it.
Last year had a soft landing Chandrayaan-3 made a successful soft landing on the south pole of the Moon on August 23, 2023. ISRO scientists said that ILSA, which detected earthquakes, was operated continuously till September 2, 2023, after which it was shut down and packed back. After this, the lander is placed at a new point about 50 cm away from the starting point.
He told that Ilsa worked on the lunar surface for about 218 hours, of which data is available for 190 hours. The authors of the study wrote, ‘We have identified more than 250 unique signals, of which approximately 200 signals are related to the physical activities of the rover or activities related to the operation of scientific instruments.
What came out in the study The authors considered 50 signals that could not be linked to lander or rover activity as unrelated events. They wrote, ‘ILSA’s missing signals may have been caused by micrometeoroid impacts at close range of the instrument, local thermal effects on the soil, or thermal adjustments within the lander sub-systems.’
A micrometeorite is a very small meteorite or the remains of a meteorite, usually less than a millimeter in diameter. Scientists also found that Ilsa recorded a wide variation in temperatures during its operation, ranging from (minus 20 degrees Celsius) to (plus) 60 degrees Celsius.
He said that a large-scale study will have to be done to understand the possible sources of ILSA data. ILSA is the first instrument to record seismic data from the lunar polar regions and the second to record ground movements on the Moon since NASA’s Apollo missions four decades ago.
When was Chandrayaan-3 launched?
The primary objective of Chandrayaan-3 mission was to demonstrate soft landing near to lunar south polar region and perform experiments using the instruments on Vikram and Pragyaan. The spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023 on-board LVM3-M4 vehicle from SDSC, SHAR
Why is Chandrayaan-3 special?
If Chandrayaan-3 is a success, it would be India’s first successful landing of equipment on the lunar surface. Even though India has satellites orbiting the moon, certain kinds of data can be collected only from the surface of the cosmic body, as opposed to data collected from the orbit
Which fuel is used in Chandrayaan-3?
Chandrayaan-3 Fuel
This largest, heaviest rocket comprises of mainly three modules- propulsion, lander and rover. The first stage of the rocket is powered by solid fuel, the second stage by the liquid fuel and the final stage comprises of a cryogenic engine which is powered by liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen
The lander for Chandrayaan-3 is named Vikram, a tribute to Vikram Sarabhai, who is widely considered the father of the Indian space program. The lander touched down on the moon’s surface in the Southern polar region on August 23, 2023.
The lander’s accomplishments include:
- The lander successfully conducted a hop experiment, landing on the moon again on command
Long-term geodetic station
The lander’s LRA will serve as a long-term geodetic station and a location marker on the lunar surface
Lunar dynamics
The LRA will help refine the lunar geodetic frame, which will provide insights into the moon’s dynamics, internal structure, and gravitational anomalies
What is the name of the robot in Chandrayaan-3?
Pragyan
Pragyan is a lunar rover developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Part of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, it successfully landed near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023. It explored the moon using cameras and scientific instruments for nearly two weeks
Chandrayaan-4 coming?
Chandrayaan-4, slated for launch around 2028, is a groundbreaking lunar sample return mission. This mission aims to collect samples from the Moon’s surface and bring them back to Earth for scientific analysis
What are the important points of Chandrayaan-4?
Chandrayaan-4 will utilize two different rockets: Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LMV-3): The heavy lifter will carry the propulsion, descender, and ascender modules. Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV): The workhorse will transport the transfer and re-entry modules to their designated lunar orbits
What is the mission of Chandrayaan-4 sample return?
The Chandrayaan-4 sample return mission would be a complex mission involving several stages. After getting into lunar orbit, two of the modules will detach from the main spacecraft and make a landing on the Moon. They will help each other in collecting samples from the lunar surface
The Chandrayaan-4 mission will consist of several key components, including a lander, ascender, transfer module, and re-entry module. The lander will touch down on the Moon’s surface, where a robotic arm will collect samples. These samples will be transferred to the ascender, which will then launch back into lunar orbit. The samples will be moved to the re-entry module, which will return to Earth, ensuring the safe delivery of lunar material.
Chandrayaan-5, on the other hand, is a collaborative effort with the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA). This mission will involve an Indian lander and a Japanese rover, weighing 350 kilograms, designed to explore the Moon’s permanently shadowed
