Old ice Found: Scientists argue that this discovery is a revolutionary step towards better understanding the history of Earth and humanity. Scientists hope that this time machine will help us understand our climate system and prepare for future challenges

Antarctica ancient ice: A mystery hidden under the icy ground of Antarctica, about seven and a half thousand kilometers away from India, has been discovered, which even scientists are surprised to see. This 1.2 million-year-old piece of ice could be the key to understanding Earth’s climate history. Scientists are also calling it a time machine. After four years of hard work, an international team has extracted this sample from 2.8 km deep snow in a temperature of -35 degrees Celsius. The discovery is part of a project called ‘Beyond Epica’, which is funded by the European Union.

How did this discovery happen?
In fact, according to international media reports, a team of scientists has taken out a 9,186 feet long ice core, in which bubbles of millions of years old atmosphere are trapped. These bubbles will give an accurate glimpse of the atmospheric condition at that time. This sample will provide invaluable data to understand Earth’s climate change. The ice has been cut into small pieces of 1 meter so that it can be studied in depth.

The mystery of climate change hidden in snow
Scientists have clearly said that information about greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane is hidden in this ice. Its analysis will reveal how factors such as sunlight, volcanic activity and changes in the Earth’s orbital position affect climate. This research will describe the time when the nature of ice ages on Earth changed suddenly and the impact it also had on the human species.

The link between humans and the ice age
About 1 million years ago, there was a change in the ice age cycle on Earth. Which challenged the existence of primitive human species. Scientists hope that studying this ice core will help understand how the Earth’s environment responded at that time and how organisms survived.

This discovery is an extension of a project started in 1996. In it, scientists understood the relationship between 8 lakh years old climate and greenhouse gases. Now this new discovery may reveal even older climate history of the Earth. In this effort, experts from 12 European institutions worked together for more than 200 days

The core is a “time machine” that records “an extraordinary archive of Earth’s climate,” said Carlo Barbante, coordinator of the Beyond EPICA, or European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica.

New Delhi:

Scientists have successfully extracted what is likely the world’s oldest ice, dating back 1.2 million years, from deep within Antarctica. Working in extreme conditions of -35 degree C, the team drilled a 2.8km-long ice core, containing ancient air bubbles that could provide valuable insights into Earth’s climate history. After four summers of intense work, the international team, racing against seven other nations, reached the bedrock beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet to retrieve the 9,186-foot-long sample.

The core is a “time machine” that records “an extraordinary archive of Earth’s climate,” said Carlo Barbante, coordinator of the Beyond EPICA, or European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica – the team that collected the core.

The air bubbles trapped within the ice core provide a direct snapshot of past atmospheric composition, including greenhouse gas concentrations like carbon dioxide and methane,” Mr Barbante said via email to CNN.

“By analysing these, we can reconstruct how Earth’s climate responded to changes in climate forcing factors, such as solar radiation, volcanic activity, and orbital variations. This data helps us understand the intricate relationship between greenhouse gases and global temperature over hundreds of thousands of years and now down to 1.2 million year(s) and hopefully beyond,” he added.

Scientists are also hopeful that the ice will help them understand why the chronology of Earth’s ice ages abruptly changed around a million years ago. A recent study suggests that this event almost led to the extinction of ancient human progenitors.

This effort is a continuation of a 1996 programme in which scientists discovered connections between the last 8,00,000 years of atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions and climate.
