Space.com quoted one of the researchers, Koichi Ijichi, as saying, “It will be a small satellite, weighing about 180 kilograms (400 pounds), which will transmit about 1 kilowatt of power from an altitude of 400 kilometers.” Koichi is also a consultant at Japan Space Systems (JSS). The project has been named OHISAMA, which means sun in Japanese. No exact date has been given for the satellite launch yet, but reports suggest that it could happen anytime after April.
Energy will be transmitted wirelessly to the ground
The best part of this project is the transmission of power to the earth. With regular solar panels, energy is converted into electricity and transmitted through wires. However, this is not possible when sending power from space. The satellite will convert the electricity into microwaves and transmit it wirelessly as a beam of energy. An antenna specially designed for this purpose will capture it.
The satellite will travel at a speed of 28,000 kilometres per hour. This means that an antenna spanning several kilometres will be needed to catch the waves. However, the aim right now is to know the feasibility of this method, so a small antenna will be enough. For this, thirteen receivers spread over an area of 600 square metres in Suva have been prepared to receive electricity
Industry results
The energy sent would only be enough to run a dishwasher for an hour, but if it works, the technology could be used to produce more clean energy by harnessing the sun in space. This is not the first time solar energy has been used in space. In May 2020, the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) launched the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle, which successfully converted solar energy in space into microwave energy and wirelessly transmitted it back to Earth.
NASA’s response
Meanwhile, NASA does not think this will be effective because of the high cost involved. It is estimated that this method will cost 61 cents per kilowatt-hour, while solar and wind power on Earth currently cost 5 cents per kilowatt-hour.
