The biggest Star of the universe

The largest known star in the universe is UY Scuti. It’s a red supergiant star that’s estimated to be over 1,700 times larger than the sun. UY Scuti has a diameter of approximately 2.4 billion kilometers.

UY Scuti is located in the constellation Scutum, which is in the central region of the Milky Way galaxy. It’s about 10,000 light years away from Earth.

UY Scuti’s size is due to its: Massive core, Rapid expansion, Short lifespan.

If UY Scuti were the center of our solar system, its photosphere would reach just past the orbit of Jupiter. The volume of almost 5 billion suns could fit inside a sphere the size of UY Scuti.

Other candidates for being the biggest star include:

  • WOH G64 A red hypergiant star in the Large Magellanic Cloud that’s 163,000 light-years away from Earth. Its estimated radius is between 1,540 to 1,730 solar radii.
  • HD 143183 A red supergiant star in the constellation Norma that’s over 6,500 light years away.
