Marriages in India are often arranged. This tradition dates back to the fourth century. In ancient times, marriages often took place when the bride and groom were in their adolescent age. 

The legal age of marriage in India is 21 years for men and 18 years for women. The parties must give their voluntary consent to the marriage. Neither of the parties should have a living spouse at the time of the marriage. 

The average age of marriage for women in India has increased from 19.3 years in 1990 to 22.3 years in 2018. In 2019, the average age of marriage was 21.8 years in rural regions and 23.4 years in urban areas.
